Bristol 2022, part 2

These two sets go together as they are geographically linked as Cumberland Basin is at the start of the Avon Gorge footpath. Cumberland Basin I'll be honest, I can't seem to stop going to Cumberland Basin and the various flyovers there - I just really like the concrete structures, the industrial element to it, and the graffiti. The bridge is basically the last bit before you get to the Avon Gorge footpath - I think it takes you into the bottom end of the Ashton Court estate, but I haven't been that far. Yet. Avon Gorge Footpath I'd actually never walked along this side of the river before 2022, despite having been in Bristol for over 25 years. I started walking here as I needed a change from Blaise, and started gently before working my way up to walking all the way to Sea Mills (about where the shot of the boat was taken) which is a round trip of almost 6 miles. That's a...

Spring 2021

It would appear that I didn't blog any photos during 2021 - OK, I didn't take a lot (actually the fewest in a year since I switched to digital), but I do have some to share. I'll share three sets here from Spring 2021. First up are images from a stroll round parts of Westbury-on-Trym in March - down the side of Henbury Golf Club, and then to the church in Westbury-on-Trym village. These are all on film - my dad's old Pentax MX 35mm and my new Ondu Panoramic Pinhole camera, also 35mm. The colours in the panoramic pinhole aren't great, but in my defence it was the first roll of C41 I'd developed. The second set are from an April visit to Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury, Wiltshire - somewhere I have visited many times over the years, but usually for their clothes-optional days. This was a "normal" visit - I wanted to go earlier in the year than usual, and also...

Cumberland Basin, July & August 2020

The photos here are from two separate visits to Cumberland Basin in Bristol, pretty much my favourite concrete place to photograph. The first, in July, was my first post-lockdown photographic trip out and was an all film affair - some of the shots are on the Hasselblad (mainly Fuji Acros, with a bit of Kodak Tri-X), while the others are from the Intrepid 5x4 large format (on Ilford Delta). These are fairly standard stuff, the sort of thing I take a lot of. For the second visit, at the end of August, I actually went out with a plan - I wanted to shoot a lot darker than normal, and to use shadow a lot more.I used the Fuji digital on manual mode (I'm normally on aperture-priority), and sometimes with an old Helios lens I bought. I also used my dad's old Pentax MX with some old Ilford Delta film. And I'm really pleased with what I took, it's quite different to what I...

Ezku – December 2019

As I had some time off over Christmas, I planned to head down to Cumberland Basin to further explore the concrete structures and harbour structures. As it happened, I saw on Purpleport that a Bristol-based model was looking for someone to take some portrait & fashion shots for their portfolio - so I suggested we could meet at Cumberland Basin and do some shots. So we did.Although as it turned out, it was heavily foggy that morning - and cold - but actually I thought this led to some interesting and atmospheric portraits. Ezku has a really interesting look - 6ft tall and an asymetric haircut that gave very different looks depending on which side you shot her from - and photographed really well, especially for an inexperienced model. I particularly liked the Mondrian dress she had - some of those images (especially the ones on the spiral staircase) look really 60s. ...

Bristol 2019

I'm lucky enough to work by the Harbourside in Bristol, which does make for some nice lunchtime walks - this is the sort of thing that I tend to post on Instagram (@shendy42), so quite a few of these are taken on my phone. Here's a selection of photos I took around the Harbourside area during 2019. Some of these are taken on film, from when I was testing my dad's Pentax cameras. The first section were taken at the Underfall Yard, and there's also quite a few images from Cumberland Basin which is another place I keep going back to as it's got the gritty concrete look I like. But I don't only photograph the harbourside - I do see other bits of Bristol. ...
